TikTok Officially Exceeds Facebook in App Downloads
TikTok, the Chinese-owned social video app, has officially surpassed its biggest competitor in downloads as of this quarters end. The app, which allows users to record themselves lip syncing to their favorite songs and create other short form videos, also hit over one billion downloads back in February.
According to a report from market research firm Sensor Tower, TikTok had its best first quarter to date at the end of March, with nearly 200 million new installs as of the beginning of the year. According to the same report, the uptick in growth can be widely attributed to India, where around 88.6 million new users downloaded the app. This means that India accounts for more than 47% of the first quarter downloads.
While these new developments for TikTok position it as a distant threat to their Western forefathers Facebook and Snapchat, it still has a way to go in terms of overall market share. Furthermore, last year saw Facebook release its own TikTok-esque app called Lasso. So, only time will tell if TikTok can keep up with its current growth trend.
