These Influencers made the MET Gala runway
While the MET Gala may have seen a whole host of our favorite movie and music stars hit the red carpet, a lineage of some social media moguls were also spotted making it onto the highly-coveted guest list of this year’s event. Gala-regulars like the Kardashians, Hadid Sisters and Jared Leto strutted down the industry’s biggest red carpet at New York’s Metropolitan Museum in gowns that hugged bodies, cinched waists, and more often than not were slit to the thigh. But this year, not just A-list celebrities graced the red carpet, some of our favorite influencers shone at the Met Gala as well and they were most certainly providing topics of discussion.
James Charles was among the social stars that rubbed elbows with the rich and famous at this year's Met Gala and had to face adverse reaction because of his attendance. James seemed unaware of any hate, posting an Instagram picture with the caption: ‘My first MET Gala. Thank you so much @youtube for inviting me and @alexanderwangny for dressing me! 💕 being invited to such an important event like the ball is such an honor and a step forward in the right direction for influencer representation in the media and I am so excited to be a catalyst.’
In an Instagram story posted the day after the ball, James urged his followers to say positive things to each other - noting that there is "a lot of negativity out there". This was probably a reference to the quite savage memes that followed his appearance at the MET Gala.
Canadian YouTuber Lilly Singh also made a fashion splash at the Gala in a gown inspired by her name, custom designed by Moschino. She detailed her look for the 'Camp' theme and said: ‘Since people always spell my name ‘Lily’... I wanted a dress that represented me and who I am for my first MET Gala and Moschino came through! For the hair, I wanted to pay tribute to the good Indian genes so I almost doubled the length of my regular hair with a long braid, topped with fresh orchids. And you better believe your girl is wearing sneakers under that dress.’
As she did last year, fellow YouTuber Liza Koshy hosted red carpet coverage for Vogue’s YouTube channel, where she interviewed Nicki Minaj, Michael B. Jordan, Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen, RuPaul, and countless others. She definitely looked gorgeous in pink as she rocked an epic ponytail while interviewing all these celebrities!
